Waiting For God’s Timing
- Have you been praying for something and you are waiting for a long time now?
- Have you ever been in a hurry when God was not?
- How to handle delay in your life?
- What do to as you wait for the Lord?
Waiting For God’s Timing
Man is always in a hurry. We don’t like to wait. We don’t like waiting in traffic or waiting in a line. Technology has made us accustomed to things fast. In fact, technology has made us impatient. Do you know that there are some things that we only learn in waiting that we learn no other way?
You cannot rush God. Some of you right now are waiting for God to open a door, waiting for a Job opportunity, you are waiting for your marriage, you are waiting for a new direction, you are waiting to heal a relationship, you are waiting for you son/daughter to come to faith, etc.
Remember, God has brought this universe into existence. God has a plan for the universe and every one of us. God’s plan fulfill on time. We don’t understand why we face delays in our life but everything regarding us is in God’s perfect timetable.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Remember, a delay is not a no from God.
In the Bible, everybody had to wait on God from Abraham to Joseph to Moses to David. God even waited 1000’s of years to send his son Jesus Christ into this world.
Psalm 27:11-14 11Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. 12Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations. 13I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
Waiting on the Lord is a vital principle for every Christian. If you just move on and take every opportunity that comes, never knowing the plans of God for you, you miss out on the God’s best for you. We must walk in the will of God. In order to walk in God’s will, we mut walk in God’s timing in our life.
Often times we make mistakes because we don’t understand the will of the Father in the suffering. We question God that he has promised something better than this. Waiting upon the Lord is not an easy thing. We must understand that suffering, hurting, pain, loss, disappointment, despair, etc are all a part of God’s plan to develop the qualities that God want for us in order to accomplish the purposes God has for us.
God’s plan is perfect. God’s timing is perfect. Wise men and women wait for God to reveal his plan in his timing.
Psalm 25:1-3 1In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. 2I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 3No one who hopes (KJV waits) in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.
Psalm 37:1 Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong.
Psalm 37:7-9 7Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. 8Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. 9For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope/wait in the Lord will inherit the land.
God is watching over you. If you and I are willing to walk in his ways, God will provide his blessings at his time.
Psalm 37:34 Hope/wait in the Lord and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.
Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.
Isaiah 64:4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
Four Things To Remember When You Wait On The Lord.
When you have asked the Lord for something and you have not seen the result yet, this is what is what you do:
1. Remember There Is A Natural Delay Between Planting And Harvesting.
When I plant something I do not go the next day morning to see fruit in it.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-5 1There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing.
You don’t plan and harvest in the same season. You always get the results of planting in life in another season, not in the same season. Many of you are waiting or your breakthrough. There is a time for the harvest, but it comes in God’s time.
Example: God called Abraham out of the Ur of Chaldeans and promised him a son. He obeyed God and left and even after 25 years of waiting he did not receive promise of child. God changed his name to Abram which means exalted father or father of a multitude. There is a time period between the promise and its fulfillment. We are called to wait on the Lord in the meantime.
2. Remember There Is An Unseen Battle Going On.
While we are waiting, there is an unseen battle going on. There is a spiritual warfare going around in a realm that we don’t even understand. We usually don’t see it or feel it. There is a cosmic war between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world, between God and Satan, between God’s angels and fallen angels. Satan hates you. He is the deceiver. He is trying to stop every kind of progress in your life but we serve a God who is fighting for us.
Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
So when you pray to God, there is a battle on how that is going to be answered.
So while you are waiting for the prayer, Satan starts throwing darts at you. The dart of doubt, the dart of unbelief, the dart of discouragement, the dart of disappointment, the dart of depression. So we must be aware that Satan is trying to get us down. The truth is we don’t really know about the spiritual warfare going on behind your prayers. But we do get a glimpse of it in one book of the Bible. In Daniel we can see once mentioned in the Bible the spiritual warfare that is going on behind the answers for our prayers and trying God in your life.
Daniel had a vision of an angel come to him and the angel said: Daniel 10:11-13 11He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling. 12Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.
There is a dimension beyond your prayers that you cannot see. “Daniel, the moment you prayed, God heard you. God sent you the answer but the prince of the Persian kingdom stopped me.” God had to send the chief princess, Michael to fight for you and here I come with your answer.
A delay is not a denial. When answer to prayer is delayed, it does not mean that they are not going to be answered. There is going to be some kind of spiritual warfare going on behind it, you got to keep on praying and seeking the will of God.
3. God Requires Us To Wait To Keep Us In Step With His Timing.
God has a timing for everything in our lives. Sometimes we are not able to handle God’s ways in our lives.
Example: When my children were small, they would want to use the scissors. They loved cutting papers and newspaper pictures. However, we would not give them. We had to keep the scissors away from their reach. Now I have no problem with that.
God is powerful to answer every prayer. But God does not work on our timetable.
Remember God Is Preparing Me In The Meantime.
When you have an idea and you ask God for it, God has a bigger or a better idea. So in order to receive that answer, God has to prepare you.
Example: Israel was in Egypt in bondage. They were praying to God for centuries but God had a time for deliverance. In the meantime, God was preparing Israel, God was preparing Moses, and God was also preparing Pharaoh for God’s power to be displayed.
Exodus 3:7-10 7The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. (when you are suffering and pray, God has already seen you) I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers (God has already heard you), and I am concerned about their suffering. (God is concerned about your suffering)
Exodus 3:9-10 9And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me (Your prayer has reached God), and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. (See God’s timing:)10So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
Illustration: David was anointed king of Israel at the young age of 16. Do you know that shortly after this the worst time of his life began to happen. For the next 14 years he ran from the sword of Saul. These 14 years David was wandering and questioning but God brought him after 14 years to the throne. Today David is known all over, Jerusalem is called the city of David.
God had a plan for David but he executed it in God’s time. God has a plan for your life today.
What was God doing to David? Getting him ready, teaching him how to suffer, teaching him how to forgive, teaching him to be wise, teaching him to be loving, teaching him to be respectful to authority.
Remember God Is Preparing Me In The Meantime.
God wants to get you ready. God is preparing you.
Some of you are going through delay right now, stay there and wait for God.
Waiting Is Always A Test.
When you are praying for something and it has not happened and you are in that delay, it is a test. Waiting tests your character, tests your trust, tests your faith, tests your endurance.
Hebrews 6:15 so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
God requires us to wait to strengthen our faith.
This is how most people wait
- Impatiently. I want it now.
- Nervously. Oh! I am going to looe it.
- Complaining. I do not know why you are not answering my prayers.
- Questioning. Lord, am I your child? Why is the delay?
- Frustrated. I don’t understand why God is treating me like this.
- Trying to manipulate God. Let me work out my own plan.
That is how some wait. That is now how God wants us to wait.
4. God Always Keeps His Promises.
That is what you need to remember when you are waiting for your promise. You can count on God. God will never fail us.
- God gave Abraham a son when he was 100 years of age.
- He delivered the Hebrews out of bondage after 400 years in Egypt.
- And God made David king after 14 years of wandering.
- After 70 years of exile God brought back the exiles to Jerusalem.
Habakkuk 2:3-4 2Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a heraldmay run with it. 3For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; itwill certainly come and will not delay.
Consequences We Face When We Fail To Wait For God:
Step Out Of The Will Of God.
We Delay God’s Blessing.
Bring Pain And Suffering Upon Ourselves.
Ex: Abraham and Hagar messes up everything.
We Cause Heartache And Suffering For Others Around Us.
It Costs Us Financially.
Three Choices We Have When We Wait Upon God:
We these three choices:
a. We Can Manipulate The Circumstances And Get What You Want.
You can get what you want out of the will of God, but you will have to face the consequences for that. You cannot alter that. God is willing to act on your behalf, but when you act you have consequences.
b. We Can Quit And Walk Away.
You can walk away from an opportunity, because it does not come when you wanted. Some of the best things I have received in life is after waiting a long time.
c. We Can Wait And Watch God Work In Our Life.
Things To Do While We Wait:
- Keep On Praying. Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
- Keep On Serving. Never be lazy but serve the Lord enthusiastically. Don’t sit around and do nothing. Find a ministry and serve God. Keep on going to small group, care cells. Romans 12:11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
- Keep On Sowing. Ecclesiastes 11:6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.
- Keep On Trusting. God is working behind the scenes. God has his best for you. If there is a delay it is for our God. Keep on trusting God in spite of your delays.
Trust God instead of panicking. God is never in a hurry God is never late. God’s timing is always perfect. Mary and Martha and the death of Lazarus. The resurrection of Lazarus. God’s timing is perfect.
When We Wait For God’s Timing:
God Is Going To Express His Goodness Toward Us.
Lamentations 3:25-26 25The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
God Renews Our Strength.
Isaiah 40:29-31 29He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
God Will Give Us Peace.
Philippians 4:4-7 4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
God Will Answer Our Prayers.
Psalm 40:1-3 1I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. If you want a new song wait for God.
If you trust and obey God, you will see God work in ways you have never seen. God will act on your behalf if you wait for him. Waiting does not mean that you are doing nothing. You are progressing even in your waiting.
