The King And His Kingdom | Luke 17:20-37

The King And His Kingdom by Rev. Shine P. Thomas

Luke 17:20-37

The Coming of the Kingdom of God

Luke 17:20-29

20Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

22Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. 24For the Son of Man in his daywill be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

26“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28“It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

Luke 17:30-37

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32Remember Lot’s wife! 33Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. 34I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”

37“Where, Lord?” they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

The Kingdom of God

I want to talk today about the kingdom of God. Jesus is the king. The earthly kings, presidents and prime ministers go a long way to make their coronation and rule the best event. Our Lord Jesus made a claim to be a King. Jesus’ coronation was not like any other coronation. His birth was lowly. Jesus’ life was simple. The only coronation Jesus received was when he entered Jerusalem on the Monday before his crucifixion. He entered on a colt where people hailed him hosanna.

The kingdom that Jesus established is the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, “The kingdom is here and I’m the King.” The people didn’t believe it. He just didn’t look like a king, He didn’t act like a king, and there was no pomp and circumstance to indicate the establishment of any kingdom. Finally, Jesus died on a cross.

Jewish Expectation Of The Kingdom Of God

The Jews had an immense expectation for the coming of the kingdom of God.

A Time Of Judgement For The World

Joel 2:1-2

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand—2a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness.

A Time Of Immense Blessing To Israel

Joel 3:18

“In that day the mountains will drip new wine, and the hills will flow with milk; all the ravines of Judah will run with water. A fountain will flow out of the Lord’s house and will water the valley of acacias.

Joel 3:1-2

“In those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, 2I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land.

Now Jesus was doing miracles. He was healing people, casting out demons, raising the dead people. But Jesus was never trying to judge the world nor bless Israel. On the other side, Jesus talked about the kingdom of God all the time. So the Pharisees asked Jesus regarding the Kingdom of God.

Luke 17:20

Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied,…

They do not see anything and they mock Jesus and ask him “Well when is the kingdom of God coming?”

See what Jesus said:

Luke 17:20-21

Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

The King was there. They were looking into His face and they did not recognize it. He was a visible King with an invisible kingdom. Now there are two aspects of the Kingdom of God.

Two Aspects Of Our Lord’s Kingdom

a. The Spiritual Kingdom

There is, first of all, the spiritual kingdom which has to be established. The first time Jesus came, He came to establish His spiritual kingdom. And the entrance into His kingdom is through repentance. The only way the kingdom of Christ, the kingdom of God advances in this age is one soul at a time, one person at a time embracing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. That is the only way the kingdom moves forward. And it is moving forward spiritually in the world today.

Until He comes the kingdom will be invisible. It will be an internal kingdom. The believers of Jesus are in the kingdom. The church is in the kingdom. It will be personal kingdom. The Kingdom of God is built soul at a time.

Matthew 3:2

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of God has come near.

1 Corinthians 4:20

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

9Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

19The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:5

No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Jesus must be acknowledged as what? As King, as the Lord of your life. Jesus will make us pure and righteous to enable us to enter His kingdom.

This is the spiritual kingdom. It’s moving. It’s expanding.

Luke 13:18-21

18Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.” 20Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty poundsof flour until it worked all through the dough.”

The Kingdom of God is growing toward that consummate, earthly kingdom when Jesus comes back the second time. And when that happens, all the signs prophesied will take place.

b. The Universal Kingdom

The second time Jesus comes, however, the kingdom will be worldwide. It will be universal. It will be visible for all to see.

Luke 17:30

It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

There will be a public revelation of Jesus when Jesus comes again. Jesus unveiled Himself on the Mount of Transfiguration. The world didn’t see who He was at all. Even after His Resurrection He appeared only to those who believed. Now He’s back in heaven but there is a day when He comes and is unveiled. Jesus will be revealed in his glory to the whole world.

The Second Coming is the culmination of the life and work of our Lord Jesus. It is His exaltation where He sets aside His long humiliation and is exalted before the whole world.

So What Is The Church The Recipients Of The Kingdom Doing Now?

a. We Are Waiting For The Son Of Man To Come From Heaven

1 Thessalonians 1:10

…to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

b. We Wait With Anticipation

We look for his appearing.

Titus 2:13-15

13while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. 15These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

2 Peter 3:12

…as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

2 Timothy 4:8

Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, swill award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

c. We Pray For His Return

Revelation 22:20

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

The Bible clearly tells us that Jesus will come, that Jesus will return to earth. The disciples wanted to know when that kingdom will come:

Acts 1:6-8

6Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:9-11

9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

How is Jesus going to come? Literally, physically, bodily right out of the clouds right down to this earth.

Now coming back to Luke 17, beginning in verse 22 Jesus describes the nature of that coming universal kingdom. It is not chronological. Here we have the nature of the kingdom as the nature of the judgment that precedes the kingdom.

7 Truths About The Nature Of The Universal Kingdom Of God

1. The Kingdom Will Be Desired By Believers

Luke 7:22

Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.

It means a strong, driving, consuming passion. A true believer will desire the kingdom of God.

Son of Man is a Messianic term connected to the coming of Messiah to establish His Kingdom. This comes from Daniel 7. It will be a desire of every believer to see the Son of Man come in glory. The idea here is not just for your own good and your own freedom, but it is that you would see Christ glorified.

2. The Kingdom Will Be Visible Globally

When Jesus Christ comes, everyone will be able to see him. This is going to be a global event.

Luke 7:23-24

23People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. 24For the Son of Man in his daywill be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.

It will be like lightning flashing clear across the entire sky. All will be to see Him.

3. The Kingdom Of God Will Be Delayed

Luke 7:25

But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

First, Jesus must suffer many things and be rejected by the Jewish nation. Secondly, the majority of the world will reject Jesus. Only when that rejection ends, the kingdom of God will come. So it will be delayed until that rejection ends and that great work of salvation is complete.

4. The Kingdom Of God Will Come Unexpected

Luke 7:26-30

26“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. 28“It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. 30“It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

The Kingdom of God will come unexpected. The flood came in a time they didn’t expect it. People were warned by Noah. They were told, but they didn’t expect it. In spite of all the warnings the people in Noah’s time did not believe. The flood came and there was no getting back to the ark. All perished. So the kingdom will come unexpected.

It will be like the days of lot. They were extremely wicked in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. All of a sudden the whole city was destroyed by fire and sulfur from heaven. Jesus will come in a day, in an hour that you do not expect.

5. The Kingdom Of God Will Reveal Every Heart

The kingdom will reveal the intention of every person. It will disclose the hearts of everyone.

Luke 7:31-33

31On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32Remember Lot’s wife! 33Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.

The point here is this: When Jesus comes on that day His coming will disclose where people’s hearts are. This is a warning not to cling to the stuff of this world. In the day when you begin to see the judgment of God, we’re going to find out what you really love.

Housetops in the land of Israel were the patios. There were the gardens. They put potted plants up there. It was place to recline and enjoy the outdoors on the patio at the top of the house. They also had an outside staircase down to the ground. And the warning is, if you’re up there and you see the preliminary judgments begin to come, don’t even go down and inside to get something. Just get out of there. Judgment is coming.

And if you’re out in a field, He says, don’t go back to the house to get something. It’s all going to feel the destruction. If you do go back, demonstrates what you love. That’s why I say, this is revelatory of the heart.

The whole earth is going to be transformed.

Nothing of the past needs to be taken into the glory of the kingdom. The emphasis here is leave everything of this world behind. Don’t put your treasure in this world.

And to explain to us this concept Jesus says, “Remember Lot’s wife.”

Lot’s wife was a story in the mind of every Jew for centuries. She is the person who was near deliverance and was destroyed because she looked back. Here is the picture of a nonbeliever.

In Genesis 19,

Lot had settled in Sodom. His wife was there, his two daughters were there. It was exceedingly sinful. There were not even 10 righteous people in the whole place. Go sends two angels to Lot’s house. The angels urged Lot, “Lot take your wife and two daughters and their husbands and run outside the city because this city is going to be swept away in punishment.”

“Escape for your life. Do not look behind you, do not stay anywhere in the valley. Escape to the mountains or you be swept away.” Lot said, “It is too difficult for me now to run to the mountains. Look there is a town near me called Zoar. Can I run to the town and you spare that town please?” The angels granted their request.

The Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur out of the heavens. God destroyed the entire city with its people and things. As lot’s wife was running, she looked back and she became a pillar of salt.

She belonged to Sodom. Her stuff was there. Her heart was there. She looked back longingly and she was destroyed with Sodom. She illustrates the person who has come to the edge of salvation but looks back.

Luke 17:33

Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.

You hold onto the world, you hold on to sin, you keep what you want of this life and you will lose it forever in hell. You give it up for the kingdom, and forever you will gain all that heaven has. If you want the best that God has prepared, then you let go of this world and its sin.

So when that Day of Judgment comes, it will reveal the condition of the heart. Jesus will reveal what you truly love, whether you love the world or whether you love God.

6. The Kingdom Of God Will Separate People

Luke 17:34-35

34I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.” 36Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. (Not in Luke, added by later translators from Matthew 24:40)

Jesus’ coming will be divisive. People will be divided because of the kingdom. Even today, some of you are alienated from your homes and friends because of our faith in Jesus. When Jesus comes, there is going to be an even greater division. We live in two completely different worlds today: People in the Kingdom of God and people outside the Kingdom of God. Both these kingdoms have two completely different loves and two completely different motivations.

The couple will be asleep at night one will be taken and other left. Two women will be grinding grain in the day. One will be taken and the other left. This is in daytime because you do your grinding in a world with no electricity in the daylight. So when Jesus comes, somewhere in the world it will be night and somewhere in the world it will be day because it’s global.

But the point is this. You have people taken and people left.

Matthew 24:36-39

36“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

The Kingdom Of God Will Separate People

The separation is like separating the wheat and the tares in Matthew 13. The tares are burned and the wheat is preserved.

7. The Kingdom Of God Will Be Judgement For The Ungodly

When Jesus said all this, his disciples were curious.

Luke 17:37

“Where, Lord?” they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

Very likely this was a Jewish proverb. “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

You can always see You always know where the dead bodies are because you look for the vultures and wherever the vultures are, that’s where the corpses are. And that’s how it’s going to be in My coming said Jesus. That’s how Jesus ends this message.

The coming of Jesus is going to be judgement for the ones who have not received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior. Those without Christ will be judged and be out of the Kingdom of God.

You can’t be in the kingdom if you reject Jesus, the Son of Man. The ones who do not believe in the Lord are going to be judged.

Jude 14-16

14Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

He comes to judge the ungodly

Guess who will escape out of that judgement and be added into the glory of the Kingdom of God? We who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are spared not because of our good deeds but we are spared because Christ took our place and we have been given His righteousness.

Are You Prepared?

Jesus Christ is the true King and He has a Kingdom, the Kingdom of God. He is the King of kings and Lord of Lords. Presently Jesus is establishing his spiritual kingdom, an invisible kingdom. Jesus is coming again into this world to establish His universal glorious kingdom.

What kind of person are you? Are you a kingdom person or a worldly person? What happens to you if the Kingdom of God came today in the second coming of Jesus? Are you prepared?

Matthew 24:42-44

42“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Jesus is inviting you into His kingdom.

Matthew 3:2

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of God has come near.

Those who are already in the kingdom of God, it is time for us to wait in holiness and pray for his return. Let’s pray
