Set Your Hope

Introduction:

What is your hope in life? Where do you set your hope? Is your hope in people? Is your hope in the prospects of your job? Do you place your hope in your money? All these are good things that God has given to us. However, these are all momentary and they will fail one day. As believers, we are called to set our hope in Jesus Christ, a hope that will never fail. Set your hope on His coming.

1 Peter 1:13-16

13Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

The key over here is: We are to set our hope on the grace that will be brought to us when Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming. What is our hope connected to? Our hope is connected to our salvation. Listen, the sentence starts with “therefore.” So Peter is connecting our hope with something that he has already said in this chapter.

1 Peter 1:3-7

Praise to God for a Living Hope

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

The coming salvation was also the hope of the Old Testament saints and angels according to 1 Peter 1:10-11.

Coming back, we receive that hope because of God’s mercy (v3 in his great mercy) and grace (v13 grace brought to us when Jesus Christ is revealed). It is not our merit but God’s mercy and grace.

Therefore set your hope.

What Do We Do Because Of The Hope?

Our Response To Salvation:

1. Control Your Mind

1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.

Be alert minded and sober minded.

To be alert is to gird your mind. The idea is, as you tie a loose garment to enable you to run effectively, tie the loose ends of your mind and fill your mind with the hope of your salvation.

Secondly, sober mind. A man that is intoxicated is not able to think clearly. We are to think clearly.

If our mind is not alert and sober by fixing our hope on the coming salvation, then we will be concerned and worried about the things of the world. Once we have our mind alert and sober in the living hope, we can then start to think clearly regarding the affairs of our life and the world around us.

How can our mind be alert and sober? Fill your mind with the reasons in v3-7. Think about them in your mind and we will be alert and sober-minded. The mind will control our heart and actions.

Now we move from the heart level of thinking to the conduct level of holiness.

2. Control Your Passions

1 Peter 1:15-16 14As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Once we lived in ignorance, that was before we were born-again. That ignorance led us to have evil desires which conformed to the worldly way of life.

Ephesians 4:22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.. Those evil desires are deceitful.

So how do we live now? Now that we are in the knowledge of God through the gospel, this knowledge leads us to a new life with godly character. Therefore, we need to prepare our mind to live holy. Prepare our minds to have the desires of God and not to conform to the old pattern of life but to the new way of life in Christ Jesus. Therefore, we need to be holy in all we do. We need to be holy as God is holy.

Our holiness is a behavior that comes from the new way of life in Christ Jesus.

Conclusion:

We need to set our hope on the coming of Jesus. Since we have the living hope of salvation at the coming of Jesus where we will receive honor, praise, and glory, we need to set our mind and heart on the hope which produces a new conduct that is holy and pleasing to God.

1. Set Your Hope On The Glory At Coming Of Jesus Christ.

We will be rewarded, we will be praised and honored by God. Set your mind on that hope.

2. Set Your Mind Meditating That Glory.

This is training our mind to read and obey scripture and in prayer.

3. Control Your Conduct Based On The New Way Of Life.

Based on the hope and the word of God, we are to strive for holiness.
