How many of us can say we are Ever ready? May it be for anything!
The day before Easter a man called his son in Delhi and said to him, “I hate to ruin your day. However, I have to tell you that your mother and I are separating after 50 years. So please call your brother in Mumbai and tell him.” Upset the son called his brother and informed the news. The second son from Mumbai called back the father and said, “Dad you both are not separating. Don’t do a single thing until we both come there tomorrow. Did you hear me, daddy?”
The father hung up his phone and turned to his wife and said “Okay, honey! It’s been 5 years since we have seen our kids. This Easter the kids are coming home and also this time they’re paying for their own flights.”
You so caught up with the earthly things? That you lose focus of your home back in heaven? Do you know that Jesus Christ is coming back again? Are you ready for the coming of our Lord?
This morning we are going to have a look at how ready are we for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Well, we are studying the final days of Jesus before Easter. After this, stiff opposition against Jesus arose and the teachers of the law wanted to arrest him. On Tuesday Jesus evaded the trap set to arrest him and took his disciples to the Mount of Olives and taught them in parables. If we study the final parables and sayings of Jesus we find 2 prominent teachings. On one side Jesus was attacking the hypocrisy of the teachers of the law but on the other side, Jesus spoke intently to disciples about his second coming.
Jesus knew that he was going to die. He had a very short time with the disciples and he was ready. And so over and over again He had told the apostles again and again that His kingdom was not of this world, and that the time would come when His enemies would kill Him, but that He would rise again. But somehow they just didn’t catch it. They couldn’t understand how that could possibly happen to Jesus, their Messiah, and their Lord.
Throughout the Passion Week and especially on the last night, in the upper room, Jesus told them plainly that the time had come, and that one of them would betray Him. Jesus even went on to say, “You will all fall away.” That’s when Peter declared
33 Peter replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
Can you imagine the confusion and gloom that settled over the disciples? When Jesus must have said that he is going to die? Moreover, when he said that one of them would betray him. This was going to be the last supper they would have with Jesus. Adding to that Jesus also said all his disciples would fall away. Also, Peter, the beloved disciple is going to betray him three times. Slowly now the message of his death is sinking into the disciples. They were visibly upset and confused. Let’s see how Jesus is comforting the upset disciples.
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; belief also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
1. Jesus is Coming Back. Are you Ready?
The message of the NT is that Jesus Christ is the savior of human lives and He is coming back to take all those who accept his Lordship to the place he is preparing for us.
Incidentally, the very next day Jesus died. He rose again on the third day. Forty days after His resurrection Jesus met with His disciples on the Mt. of Olives. Where He ascended to heaven. The angels repeated that same promise.
9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” The angels spoke of Jesus’ coming.
The OT prophets spoke of Jesus’ coming.
In my vision at night, I looked, & there before I was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of Heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days & was led into His presence. He was given authority, glory & sovereign power; all peoples, nations & men of every language worshipped Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, & His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Daniel says that he saw the Son of Man coming with the clouds of Heaven in glory & power. And all the people & nations of the entire world worshipped Him!
Apostle Paul spoke of Jesus’ coming.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
16 For the Lord, himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
Listen, Jesus Christ is coming back. Jesus isn’t sending an ambassador – He is coming Himself! And we need to be ready for that day. So let’s take time to consider Jesus seriously. Be excited about the coming of Jesus. Be aware of the importance of having our hearts prepared for His coming. Are you excited about his coming?
Summer vacations are soon approaching. Sam is, in fact, counting the number of days he has left to go to school this year so that he can enjoy his vacations. With each passing day the smile grows, the adrenaline level rises, the expectation of the summer vacation bursts forth in every talk.
Isn’t it fun to watch the excitement grow on the faces of our children as summer vacation approaches? Have you seen your children looking forward to a picnic? They are excited, they are waiting. We should be even more excited! You & I must be excited about the coming of our King dressed in all His glory.
Do you realize that? We’re commanded to look forward. To the coming of Jesus.
2 Peter 3:11-12
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.
The Bible ends in Revelation with a promise and anticipation that Jesus Christ is coming back.
“He who testifies to these things says, ’Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”
Isn’t that beautiful? John hears Jesus say, “I am coming soon” & John says, “All right, then, Come, Lord Jesus!” That should be our attitude, too.
2. Coming of the Lord will bring mixed emotions, are you ready?
1 Thessalonians 4:17
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
“Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
If you’re a Christian it should thrill you. We are going to be with the Lord. There is no more pain. No more sorrow. Jesus will wipe away all our tears.
If we are not a person who believes in Christ then you will be in the left-behind group. The Bible does not keep us in the dark about the times when people are left behind. After the rapture, there will be a 7-year period on the earth, a time which has never been experienced before by anyone. The Bible calls this 7-year period as The Great Tribulation. This is a period filled with terror, fright, and horror.
Jesus spoke about this time.
Matthew 24:21-22 (KJV)
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect, those days will be shortened.
2 Peter 3:10
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything was done in it will be laid bare.
2 Peter 3:12
That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
If you think about the atrocities (barbaric acts) that the earth faced from Adam and Even until today like famine, wars, diseases, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, forest fire, flood, human right violation, etc. Jesus said if you add up all together it is going to be still worse in this 7-year period. It is a terrible time. Don’t be left behind to face this terror Receive Jesus now.
A man enrolled himself as a member of the orchestra to the emperor of China although he couldn’t play a note. Whenever the group practiced or performed, he would hold his flute against his lips, pretending to play but not making a sound. As a member of the orchestra, he received a salary & enjoyed a comfortable living.
Then one day the emperor requested a solo from each musician. The man was terrified. He pretended to be sick. the royal physician wasn’t fooled. On the day of his solo performance, he took poison & killed himself. He left a suicide note left behind. The note which said, “I couldn’t face the music.” This phrase later found its way into the English language: “Face the music.”
Today someone can pretend to be a part of God’s orchestra by just blending in with the crowd, some can just come to church and deny salvation and water baptism and pretend to be a child of God. But there will come a day when you & I must “face the music.”. On that day if you are not a true Christian you will be left behind. You will have to face the wrath of God.
Now is the time to prepare, for at that moment when Christ appears in the sky, they will suddenly realize that it’s too late.
So what do we do?
3. Get Ready!
Be prepared. He may come at any time and we need to be ready always.
a. Be ready because the second coming is a secret coming.
But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
1 Thessalonians 5:1-4 The Day of the Lord
1 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
No one knows the hour or date. Jesus can come back at any time. Now God stands to wait & willing to forgive. He has patiently postponed His coming to give us more chances to come to repentance, & more opportunities for people to accept him.
b. Be ready because there will be a selection.
40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
Note that Jesus talks about people involved in regular day-to-day activities or jobs. He is talking about two outwardly identical people. One is selected other is rejected. So then what is the selection based upon? Listen, the selection is not based on external look or preparation, selection is based on internal preparation.
Now see what Jesus said
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
If we clearly look at this passage this selection already takes place before the Lord arrives. The selection was not made by Jesus but by each individual. One of the primary criteria of selection is everyone who believes in Christ. Therefore if you want to be selected you must accept Jesus Christ. Accept as the Lord and Savior of your life now.
Jesus is coming soon. Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior? Altar Call.
Believers, Are you ready for the coming of the Lord? Never think there is plenty of time, we are living in the end days.
There is a fable that tells of three apprentice devils coming to this earth to finish their apprenticeship. They were talking to Satan, the chief of the devils, about their plans to tempt and to stop a man from God.
The first said, “I will tell them that there is no God.”. Satan said, “That will not deceive many, for they know that there is a God.” The second said, “I will tell men that there is no hell.” Satan answered, “You will deceive no one that way; men know even now that there is a hell for sin.” The third said, “I will tell men that there is no hurry, you can continue like what you want.” “Go,” said Satan, “and you will stop many lakhs from God.”
The most dangerous of all delusions is that there is plenty of time. We are more concerned about the world and worldly affairs. We don’t prepare ourselves. Are we? Jesus is coming again! Looking forward to that with anticipation. To be ready and I pray that you are, too. I don’t want it to be a doom & gloom day for City Harvest. I want it to be a day of joy & happiness to be with our Lord. To meet our loved ones who have gone before where we’re together around His feet. Let’s Get Ready.
