I have heard a lot of people asking me, how do is live wise. How do I make the best use of every opportunity? We are living during a historic time where there is unprecedented lock down around the world. Most people have a lot of time at their disposal. So how are you living?
Live Wise During Lock Down
Ephesians 5:15-21 15Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
See how Paul starts the text: Ephesians 5:15 Be very careful… How many times have you heard those words? I remember my mother saying those words to me as I was growing up.
In those verses we have some good advice for living during lock down. This passage is a summary of chapters 4-6. Here Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, writes to the believers at Ephesus to live wisely. How you live wise is talking about Christian ethics. One can use these principles and live wise during these days.
We Can Live Wise Because Of God’s Wisdom.
We can live wise because of God’s wisdom upon us. Ephesians 1:8 …he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. Wise living is possible because God has lavished on us his wisdom and understanding.
Paul prays for the Ephesians believers to receive that wisdom: Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
God Wants Us To Make His Wisdom Known To The World
Ephesians 3:10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers, and authorities in the heavenly realms…
Now that God has given us his wisdom, we are to live according to that. So live wise. Paul has already addressed them how wise people walk or conduct themselves.
a. Walk Worthy Of The Calling.
Ephesians 4:1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.
b. Walk in Love.
Ephesians 4:2 Be complexly humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
c. Walk As Children Of Light.
Ephesians 4:17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their heats.

HOW DOES THE WISE LIVE?
1. Wise People Make The Most Of Every Opportunity.

Those who live wise make the most of every opportunity. Those who are wise will have the right attitude to time. How are you using your time during these days?
Grab every opportunity to live wise the reason is the days are evil. Evil days are under the control of the prince of the power of the air who opposes the purpose of God. The devil exercises authority over men and women outside of Christ, keeping them in bondage. Ephesians 2:1-3 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work I those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and the following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
But the Ephesian church have already become the light in the Lord. We have already become the light in the Lord. Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.
Therefore, make use of your time. Live as children of light because the days are evil.
2. Wise People Understand God’s will
Ephesians 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
What is God’s will for my life?
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
c. Holy And Transformed
1 Thessalonians 4:3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.
c. Give Thanks 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
d. Do Good
1 Peter 2:15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.
e. Be Just, Love Mercy, And Be Humble.
Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
3. Wise People Are Filled With The Spirit
Ephesians 5:18 .…be filled with the Spirit..
We are called to walk in the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
Be filled with the Spirit is connected to what Paul has already stated in: Ephesians 1:13-14 ..having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing your inheritance until the redemption ….
2:18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Sprit.
Ephesians 3:16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.
Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
The Holy Spirit is in you. Therefore, walk wisely filled with the Spirit. We need to have the Holy Spirit transform all the areas of our live.
Ephesians 5:19-20 Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Speaking. Singing. Giving thanks. Submitting
This is the contrast between believers and nonbelievers.
Paul talks to us that now that we are redeemed out of darkness into God’s light live wise. You have already been given the wisdom of God through the Holy Spirit. So make use of your time. Understand God’s will. Be filled with the Spirit. Friends, let’s make the most of the time and opportunity God has given us. May God give you the grace to live wise. Amen.
