Response to God’s Love | 1 Peter 1:17-22

Do you know that God loves you more than anyone else? In fact, God loved us even before the creation of the world. God continues to love us now and has promised to be with us all through eternity. Since God loves us and has given us salvation through his son Jesus Christ, what is our response to God’s love?

1 Peter 1:17-22

17Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 22Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

In this passage Peter is talking about what God has done for us and what God expects us to do.

1 Peter 1:17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially…

We Are To Call On The Father

This is a simple present tense. We are to call on the Father every day. How is your prayer life? Do you depend on the Father God every day of your life?

Father Is An Impartial Judge Of The Universe

Peter reminds us that our Father is also the judge of the universe. Father shows no favoritism, so there should be the fear of discipline. Being a child of God or membership in God’s family, must not lead to the presumption that disobedience will pass unnoticed or undisciplined. Believers will be judged and rewarded according to their deeds in life.

We Will Be Judged And Rewarded At The Return Of Jesus Christ

Romans 14:12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 10By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

We Will Also Be Judged By God Here And Now

This judgement also happens to us even now. We face the consequences of our action even today. God also disciplines us at the present time.

Hebrews 12:5-11 5And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” 7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.

9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

The Father is an impartial judge. So we have a final judgement and a present judgement. We serve a God who is a judge and there is no partiality with God. The impartiality of the Father tells us that both believers and nonbelievers go through this judgement.

What Did The Father Do For Us?

Father Sent His Son, Jesus For Us

Listen, God is our Father. What has God done for us? Peter has already told us that he is gracious and merciful to us. Father has foreknown or elected us. He has sent his Son for us.

1 Peter 1:18-19 18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

The Living Hope | 1 Peter 1 :3-5

Who Is Jesus?

Jesus Is The Precious Valuable Spotless Lamb Of God

We were redeemed by the Precious blood of Christ. The hereditary chain of sin is broken by Christ. We know that we have been ransomed by God through Jesus by his precious blood.

By The Blood Of Christ Our Consciences Are Cleansed.

Hebrews 9:14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

By The Blood Of Christ We Gain Access To God In Worship And Prayer.

Hebrews 10:19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus..

By The Blood Of Christ We Are Progressively Cleansed From Sin.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from allsin.

Revelation 1:5b To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.

By The Blood Of Christ We Are Able To Conquer Every Evil.

Revelation 12:11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

By The Blood Of Christ We Are Rescued From The Sinful Way Of Life.

1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

We call on a Father, who is an impartial Judge. The Father has sent his Son and by his blood we have access to the Father. See what else this passage talks about the Son:

1 Peter 1:20  He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

Jesus Was Chosen Before The Creation Of The World

It was determined before the foundation of the world, by the foreknowledge of God that God would send his Son into the world as a Savior of mankind.

Jesus Was Revealed In The Last Times

This means that when Jesus entered the world the last days began. We are in the last days end times for the past 2000 years. I have seen some people say looking at the things around that these are last days. The Bible says that the end times began at the coming of Jesus.

Acts 2:16-17 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people….

Hebrews 9:26 But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself..

With the coming of Jesus into the world, the end of the ages have come.

Father Raised Jesus From The Dead And Glorified Him

1 Peter 1:21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Jesus has been honored by the Father and is glorified now. He is seated at the right

What Is Our Response To God’s Love?

1. Call On The Father

Our first response to God’s love is to call on the Father for salvation. Then, we are to call on the Father every day and moment of our life.

2. Live Holy

Our second response to God’s love is to live holy lives. Previously Peter said be holy in all your conduct.

3. Fear God

Our third response to God’s love is to fear him. It is a kind of reverential fear. Fear of God is a fear of fatherly discipline.

4. Love One Another

1 Peter 1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

Our fourth response to God’s love is to love one another from a pure heart. Our relationship with God must reflect in our loving one another and even loving who are unlovable according to us.

Conclusion:

God is our Father who is an impartial judge. He will judge both the righteous and unrighteous. In God’s mercy, he has sent us the Son who died, rose again and is glorified by God the father. Therefore, our response to God’s love is that we are to call on him, we are to live holy lives and have a conduct that is motivated by reverential or fatherly fear.
