1 Peter 3:1-6 | Be A Godly Wife! | Every Believing Wife Must Watch This

How to be a godly wife?

The Bible gives us clear guidelines on how to be a godly and good wife. We are also going to see how we can win over a nonbelieving husband and what is submission in a marriage.

Proverbs 31:10

A wife of noble character who can find. She is worth far more than rubies.

Do you know a wife plays an important role in the family?

Wives and mothers are known for their patience, hard work and multitasking capabilities. God gives you the grace to be a noble, efficient and a godly wife.

So how can one be a godly wife?

1 Peter 3:1-6

1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.

4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Peter is addressing a wife’s relationship with her husband.

This passage is generally addressed to all wives as to how to relate to your husband. I also understand that there are women who come alone to faith. When the wife is a believer, she may go through a lot of accusations from her nonbelieving husband. Going to church and the new fellowship that she has found in God does not make any sense to the nonbelieving husband. So, if your husband is not a believer, you too can use these biblical principles to win over your husband.

Peter starts this passage by saying, “Wives in the same way.” This connects us to the previous teaching. Peter is talking about our conduct among the nonbelievers. This is a continuation on the subject of submission for the Lord’s sake to all people, and now Peter is particularly speaking about wives here.

Just as all Christians must be subject to human authorities like citizens to government authorities and servants to be subject to their masters, Peter now exhorts godly wives to be submissive to their husbands. Wives are to submit to their own husbands even if they are not believers.

What Are The Characteristics Of A Godly Wife?

1. A Godly Wife Is A Woman Of Less Words

1 Peter 3:1

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives.

If you have a nonbelieving husband, you can win him over for Christ without a word. Now, the question is: Can a husband be won to Christ without a word? I do not think anyone can be saved without the word of God which is the good news of the gospel. If anyone has to receive Christ, the word has to be spoken.

What it means here is that your husbands can be won over without a nagging word, without an excessive word.

Yes, you need to speak the gospel but you need to discern when this word becomes nagging, pressure, offensive to your husband. So Peter is cautioning wives that once your nonbelieving husband knows what you believe, it is your conduct that can win him over.

Now, even if your husband is a believer, there are times when our words can cause a friction in the relationship. This can happen from both the husband and the wife. So Peter says win him over without words but with love.

2. A Godly Wife Has An Excellent Behavior

The behavior of the wife is a way of winning the husband.

1 Peter 3:1

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives.

This talks about both godly women and deceitful or wicked women, unruly and defiant women (Proverbs 7:10-11). The book of Proverbs talks about adulterous women. However, the Bible also gives good examples of a godly wife.

Wives are to have a pure conduct out of your reverence to God. She is not dishonest about anything. She is not into any illicit relationships or behavior patterns. The unbelieving husband finds that he has a pure and trustworthy wife.

3. A Godly Wife Fears God And Puts Her Hope In God

1 Peter 3:1-2

…. they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.

In the context of this book, reverence or fear is attributed towards God. So your husband is not your ultimate fear. God must be all our ultimate fear. You may sometimes have to displease your nonbelieving husband in matters regarding God, but we cannot displease God in anything. He is our supreme master. So in the fear of God a wife is to be in a subjective relationship to her husband. So, a godly wife fears God not her husband.

Glory and myself have counseled a lot of wives over the years, especially some of them whose husbands are not saved. Some wives are generally very afraid of their husband. You do not have to be afraid of your husband, you are called to fear God. Do not give way to fear in people, because our hope is in the Lord.

A godly wife puts her hope in God.

1 Peter 1:5

For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves.

Look at the women of the Bible, they went through difficult times, but they put their hope in God. Sarah is a good example for us. It was not easy to travel with a husband who did not have clarity of his route, but Sarah’s hope was in the Lord.

4. A Godly Wife Takes Care Of Her Inner Beauty

1 Peter 3:3-4

3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

Does it mean that a woman should not have hairstyles or gold jewelry? We personally do not wear any gold ornaments, but is it an absolute what Peter is talking? See what Peter says clearly. He is talking about hairstyles, jewelry, and clothing. So if you choose any one as an absolute, then we need to follow the other two as well. Then you cannot wear fine clothing too. That is not the point here. Peter is telling wives not to go the extra effort of pleasing your husband with elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. You do no have to spend your money on these to attract your husbands to you and win them to Christ. This is what the world does.

Real beauty is your inner beauty.

1 Peter 3:4

Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

Focus on the unfading beauty which is inner self. All the other things are fading beauty. You cannot use those jewelry and clothes for long. They will fade and your body also will eventually lose its glory, but the inner beauty is unfading.

What is inner beauty?

Inner beauty of a woman is a gentle and quiet spirit.

So how does a woman get this inner beauty? Put your hope in God.

1 Peter 3:5-6 5

5For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Inner beauty comes from God. When you put your hope in God, God fills you with gentle and quiet spirit. Even in the face of very difficult circumstances and accusations, you will be gentle. In Christ, you behavior becomes gentle, quiet, pure with the fear of God.

This will make a change in your family. This will make a change in an unbelieving husband.

1 Peter 3:15-16

15But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

A woman who has put her hope in God will be able to answer about your hope to your husband. Your hope in God will produce a gentle and quiet spirit which will in turn affect your behavior and purity of life in the fear of God. When your husband sees you like this and then there is an opportunity for you to explain your hope, perhaps God may save him.

Where does Peter go back as a foundation to what he has said? He does not go to culture but he goes back to the word. But he goes to Sarah. He talks about the holy women. He talks about the hope of these women.

1 Peter 3:5-6

5For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Like believers in Jesus are Abraham’s children, you are Sarah’s daughters if you conduct yourself with goodness, good behavior, submit and obey to your husbands.

All this starts with hope in God. Hope in God brings holiness. Out of the hope and submission to God, women submit to their husbands and are full of good deeds. This woman is full of hope, full of obedience to God and also submission to her husband and doing good deeds which makes her husband proud of her.

What example of Sarah is Peter talking about?

Remember Abraham told Sarah to act like his sister going into Egypt and Sarah obeyed him. But she was soon taken into Pharaoh’s harem. Pharaoh was about to defile her and it was detestable before God. This is not the obedience Peter is meaning here. Wife should not obey your husband to sin.

The only instance where Sarah called Abraham lord is when the Lord visited Abraham’s tent in Genesis 18. After the meal, the Lord told Abraham about having a child in a year’s time. She heard this from behind and laughed to herself and addressed Abraham as her lord. This is the respect shown by Sarah to Abraham not in a direct conversation but in the way she thought about her husband. Peter choses to show the example of Sarah in this context. Sarah’s natural way of speaking and reacting to her husband was of respect. That is what Peter is meaning here. Your natural way of speaking to your husband should be of respect to him.

What are the characteristics of a godly wife?

  1. A Godly Wife Is A Woman Of Less Words
  2. She has An Excellent Conduct
  3. And She Fears God And Puts Her Hope In God
  4. A Godly Wife Takes Care Of Her Inner Beauty

What submission is not?

  1. Submission is not agreeing with the husband on all matters.
  2. It is not avoiding the effort to win her husband for the Lord.
  3. It also is not putting the will of the husband before the will of Christ.
  4. Submission is not acting in fear to the husband.
  5. And submission is fearing God which in turn will change your behavior to your husband.

We are sure that you are all godly women. But sometimes good reminders keep us in track. This is a reminder to continue as a godly wife. May our God continue to give you the grace to be a godly woman and a wife in spite of the challenges you are going through in life. Amen.
